Local Feature: Nifty Nuthouse
I have been wanting to feature Nifty Nuthouse since I started this series, and when I heard they had moved into a bigger location, I knew it had to happen soon. My family has always loved this place - both sides of my family are longtime fans of their nuts and candy. To say they’re a Wichita classic would be an understatement. And if you haven’t been, there’s no better time than now with their new location.
I think I was so excited to come in, I forgot I was literally taking a kid into a candy store. B could not believe her luck! We got her a little bag of sesame sticks to carry while my mom and I shopped around. She figured out pretty quickly that those pretty little wrapped things were candy she could eat, so that was a smart move on Lolly’s part.
My grandpa used to get his unsalted boiled peanuts from the Nifty Nuthouse when he made Christmas candy (peanut clusters and peanut brittle, of course) and their packaging is the same classic, crisp brown bags. The pre-measured bags of candy and dried fruit are neatly stacked on the shelves, and it’s every variety you could imagine. I had no idea even half of it existed! It’s a snack lover’s dream.
We brought home the Sweet Caroline (very popular if you haven’t tried it) mix, BBQ Honey Spice mix (Jordan’s new favorite), and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels that absolutely knocked my socks off. It had been far too long since we’d been in here, and I forgot how good their mixes are. The quality is just there. You can’t beat it!
The entire store is bordered with vintage gumball machines! My grandpa used to buy his gumball machine candy here too. Their store is so full of charm (and memories for me personally.)
There’s a lot of space in the new location. It’s so family friendly! We saw mamas with strollers come in and have no issue thanks to the super wide aisles. Plus their hours are great if you have little kids since they open at 8AM. Apparently my grandpa used to pop in here to get his snacks before work also. Work snacks are necessary, am I right?
